[LbNA] Technical Problem

From: Tom Cooch (tcooch@mail.sover.net) | Date: 1999-10-05 07:56:20 UTC
I've been having a problem with my computer for a little over a month
now - ever since it crashed and I had it refurbished: more RAM,
faster prcessor, new hard drive. I am hoping someone on our list may
be able to help me.

Whenever I try to access certain websites - usually our LbNA sites -
I have a little window open up with a Done button in the center. I
have to click on that button repeatedly - perhaps a dozen times -
before the page will fully load.

This happens with both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, so
it would not seem to be browser dependent.

It also happens with a few other sites besides our own ones, e.g.
Infoseek Search engine. But the majority of sites - most of which
have more images to load than ours have - do not give this problem.

I am using a newer version of Windows 95 on this new computer, so I
don't know if the key lies there or not.

Hoping someone can help.

Tom

I'm going to avoid the temptation to say "shoulda bought a
Macintosh"... :-)

It sounds like an issue with speed or memory. Can you run a diagnostic
test and be sure you are getting the benefit from the RAM you
installed? Also, Mr. Gates tends to clutter up his new software with a
lot of uneccesary code, so by installing an updated system version, you
could have allocated every bit of RAM just for that. Again, checking
your system to see just how much RAM is available for use by your
browser might cure the problem. If there is more available, try
increasing the memory available to the browser program. With a Mac this
is easy... not sure how you do it with a Windoze based box.

After you resolve the memory issue, I'd be looking at your modem.

good luck!!!

BTW.. my previous remarks are my own opinion and are based on my limited
experience with computers. I mostly just hit the keyboard against the
monitor until the danged thing works most mornings. Your experience may
differ.

Good morning Tom

I don't know what your little button is BUT I sometimes get a similar
problem inthat a page seems to load, the bar at the bottom says "done"
and there is nothing on the screen. I use my "back" to access the
previous page and try again. This seems to work most of the time. Its
very frustrating but I've never had to try more than 3 times. I wonder
if there just aren't enough phone lines in VT? Maybe the message gets
garbled?

My system is Pentium 133, 20MB ram, Windows 3.11, 1MB graphics mem.
The other system also used is Pentium II 333Mhz, 48 ram, Windows 98, 4
MB graphics memory. It happens on both.

"Wind that Shakes the BArley" is on for Nov 6th at the Long Trail -
lucky us!

Best regards,
Susan

A good splash of hot coffee on the keyboard sometimes helps too.

Thanks to all of you who sent replies to my request for technical
assistance. Thom's suggestion regarding memory allocation to my
browser(s) seems the most promising at this time. But I am grateful
for the facetious as well as for the serious answers. I will let you
know what I find out.

Thanks,

Tom
